about historic windsorWindsor House

Historic Windsor, Inc., (HWI) was formed in 1971 when a group of citizens, motivated by a common interest in historic preservation, joined together to prevent the demolition of Windsor House. In acquiring, renovating, and managing this beautiful Greek Revival building, HWI has become much more than the keeper of an historic building. Windsor House returned to private ownership on April 8, 2005.

HWI assists Windsor and many towns in the Upper Valley Region of Vermont and New Hampshire in local preservation efforts. It established the Vermont State Craft Center at Windsor House (now independently managed) and the Preservation Education Institute, a training program in historic preservation skills, technology, and philosophy for building professionals that has served more than 2,500 students since its inception in 1982.

The Asher Benjamin Architectural Model, a traveling teaching tool for schools, museums, and historic sites, was built in 1987. Special educational programs and tours include programs about gardening, landscape preservation, decorative arts, preservation in community planning, fire safety and historic preservation, and accessibility and historic properties. HWI has published an Architectural Walking Tour of Windsor, Vt. and Accessibility and Historic Preservation: A Resource Guide.

Each of its programs in its own distinctive way realizes something of the mission:

Historic Windsor, Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Windsor House and fostering an understanding of and respect for our heritage by teaching preservation skills and promoting traditional craftsmanship through The Preservation Education Institute.
